Oh, Baby

Welp. My best friend is pregnant. Twenty-three weeks along, for the precise among you, and I am really excited. So excited, in fact, that I enthusiastically hit the subscribe button to receive the same watch-the-baby-grow emails that she does. They arrive every Monday and include savory details such as ‘your baby’s pancreas — essential for the production of some important hormones — is developing steadily!’

Exclamation point!

I actually do find them fascinating and always nod along as I read which developing organ is being highlighted. Does baby have functional eyes yet? Perhaps the fingernails are making their embryonic debut as we speak! It all feels pretty randomized to me, as though there are little toes and ears popping out, willy nilly, in there.

Moving to the point. Because a) my friend is fantastic and b) I wasn’t able to throw a wedding shower when she got married last June, organizing a baby shower was a no-brainer. I want her to have the experience of an ooh’ing and aah’ing community surrounding her as she gestates. Sometimes the pure bustle of excitement really frosts the cake, y’know?

I’m piecing together ideas and am excited to throw the best gosh darned party ever. The theme is woodland animals … but in simple and modern way. Animal silhouettes, geometric shapes, bright colors. Since I haven’t been to a baby shower in years and entertaining people I don’t know isn’t always my forte (introvert alert), I have been jotting down suggestions from all kinds of sources. Including you. YOU! Favorite shower games, best Etsy shops for decorations, appetizer recipes, the works. Tell me your secrets.

Stina - I love the woodland animals! So creative.

I have a love/hate relationship with baby showers. At mine, I was bowled away by the show of support from dear friends but it sure was awkward to have everyone staring at me while I opened presents.

I like the idea of a Mother Blessing better — it really focuses the attention onto the mama-to-be and her transition into motherhood. Becoming a parent is hella crazy. Nothing really prepares you for the shock of that change! At baby showers, the focus is — rightly so — on the baby. But taking time with your most-loved friends to reflect on becoming a mama is so special. I think we forget that, when a baby is born, a mother or father is born, too.

Anyway, read up on mother-blessings here if you are interested: http://webbabyshower.com/baby-shower/mother-blessing/

Send my congrats to Candy!

Emily - This is so good and thoughtful, Stina. You’re right- there is such a big emphasis on the baby but (I can only imagine at this point) the changes people undergo as they become parents are also huge and should not be forgotten. Definite food for thought as I continue planning.

I’ll pass along your congrats!

And, I’ll be in your neck of the woods in May… I’m going to send you an email so we can maybe get together?

Maggy - So sweet! I keep FB stalking her to see photos or updates…most of the time I am left with nothing. SO maybe I will stalk you too….
