We got the meal planning off to a slow start this week. There was a lot of snow on the ground and very little motivation on my part to drive to the grocery store in the slipperiness. We finally headed to Trader Joe’s on Tuesday.
Let me make something clear here: I love Trader Joe’s. I love Trader Giotto, Trader Jose, Trader Joe-san. All of those guys. Love ’em. When I stepped into TJ’s three months ago, it was the first time I had been in one of their stores after hearing people rave about it for years. I know people who have dried fruit sent to them by their sisters in California just to get their fix. Dried fruit! So, I went. I wasn’t impressed.
BUT. The problem was that I hadn’t been to any of the other grocery stores around town. I didn’t yet grasp how expensive ALL food is on the East Coast. It’s all in the comparison, and now I feel like a traitor to have harbored such thoughts. Trader Joe’s has a great selection and great prices and I am officially on the bandwagon.
Did I mention food on the East Coast is insanely expensive?
Without further ado, here are our vegetarian (again!) food picks for the week. We made number one last night for the second time. It’s quite easy and we’ve loved it both times. Farro has a texture a little like barley, but I like the flavor more. I also add some extra cheese because, c’mon, it’s cheese. If someone asked me ‘what’s your favorite cheese’, I would just say ‘yes’.
1. Food & Wine | Cheesy farro and tomato risotto
2. Allrecipes | Easy one-step spinach lasagne
3. Smitten Kitchen | Swiss chard and sweet potato gratin
4. Tastespotting | Green goddess grilled cheese sandwiches
5. An East Indian curry dish that I will share when we’ve made it!
